What do I need to do in my classroom for my students to read complex text?
To enjoy and succeed with reading complex text, I must introduce it in a way which catches their interest, relates to their own prior knowledge and builds an experience base for deeper comprehension.
I must model and encourage good reading habits, such as slowing down and phonetically pronouncing words and looking up their meaning. I will often ask students to look up word meaning on-the-spot for me while we are reading, and I see this habit sticking with some of them.
I must also encourage and require students to annotate and takes note while reading a text so they comprehend the plot and are able to remember and make connections from prior chapters to build a sophisticated understanding of the messages and themes within the book.
